Come for a day of natural dyeing with a fanatical dyer. learn about and enjoy the pots of colour that can be created from around you. Colours of the earth from Puff ball fungi, euycalptus gums, iron and rust as well as whatever else can be sourced sustainbly. Expect gorgeous rich earthy tones and quiet soft shades that fit comfortably with any wardrobe or home. Bring silks, wools, some cottons and a bundle of threads, yarns and fibres. I will demonstrate simple resist techniques, show you how to prepare and mordant your work for dyeing and run dye pots all day for you to experiment with.

Art toys are highly collected throughout Europe and have been making a mark on the world wide textile scene. Many books have been published in the past year, dedicated to softies and their designers.

Come along and join us, in a day of inspiration and creative exploration. Design and create your own individual softie, which you or a small person will cherish. Learn the design and construction process, with many helpful tips. A basic sewing machine, a good selection of fabrics and a touch of creativity is all that you need to bring.

In this workshop we’ll create an intriguing & intricate panel of cutwork in a geometric design. The design is then embellished with free machine embroidery & further techniques which further enhance the complex surface. The final panel is suitable for inclusion in many sewing projects such as a bag, cushion, waistcoat, book cover etc. The technique can also be adapted for use as decorative detailing on garments e.g. around a neckline, hem, pocket or belt. During the workshop I also discuss how colour & texture choices can dramatically alter the final outcome & make the piece your very own.

In this polymer clay workshop for beginners we will be learning how to create a basic millefiori cane (similar to the technique used by lolly makers). We will then be using this cane to create 5 or more different objects and pieces of jewellery.

Well, as we promised here are the details of our 1st weekend of workshops for June 2009.
I must point out that this year all our workshops will be focused over the winter months of June & August, so get in while you can!

I have had a request to run my workshop "Pandora's Box". In this workshop you will learn to make a soft felt trinket box using free machine embroidered applique techniques. The workshop is suitable for beginners, as well as those who are familiar with free machine embroidery. I have arranged for it to be held on Monday April 30th, 9.30am - 3pm. Depending on how many people are interested in doing the class, it will either be at my studio in Fremantle or at a location in Applecross. This workshop will cost a 'one off workshop' charge of $65 per person.

Inspiring

Yesterday evening I went down to Cottesloe to look at Sculpture by the Sea. What a joy this annual event is! Sculpture in all it's forms all around the beach & foreshore - even one floating on the ocean. It is free and in a busy public place so is exposing exciting art to many who wouldn't think of visiting traditional galleries. I'll certainly be returning to look more closely - especially at a lovely piece in knitted wire & steel mesh.
Those of you who have been to my recent workshops will know of my love of the mobius form and yes there was a mobius sculpture - left.
Carved from granite, it looks like two pieces, but in fact it is one piece. Although textile itself is a bit thin on the ground, there are references such as copper & steel 'pillows' as well as works in seaweed & threads and cane. The exhibition runs 24/7 until 18th March. Make the effort to visit - I guarantee it's worth it.

I've been browsing the Textile Directory website where there is lots of info on all the things we're into. It's a shame that a lot of it - exhibitions, workshops etc - is in the UK, but it's full of links and a great place to start an hour or two's web surfing. What's more, membership is free!!

Year 12 Perspectives

I've just returned from the Year 12 Perspectives exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA. As usual it was a great show showcasing local young talent. I was especially keen to see it as I knew that a Catalyst student has a piece in it. Rebecca Nidorf and her Mum, Louise, have been attending Catalyst workshops for some time and I couldn't help but feel proud to see Rebecca's delightful "...and tea for two" Using a variety of felting and stitch techniques she has created a gorgeous lifelike tea party, complete with crockery, cake, sandwiches and even lamingtons!! Well done Rebecca.
There is plenty of other textile work too, including "The Widow" a stunning Rococo style dress in white "silk fusing", Frayed Deceptions (above) and some great 'art to wear'. The exhibition runs until 29th April. Exhibition details are on the AGWA website

Knitting Season

The British speed knitting champion is Hazel Tindall with a record of 255 stitches in 3 minutes. For crochet fans, Susan Briscoe's record is 76.5 double crochet stitches in 3 minutes?
Unbelievable!!!

I won't expect such speeds at my upcoming repeat of my Mobius Knitting & Crochet Workshop. It will be held at my studio on Friday 20th April 10am - 1pm. Cost $20
During the workshop I teach you how to cast on and knit this unusual 'wrap with a twist' as well as a crocheted version (above) The mobius has only one edge (believe me) and this version has no seams.

Already the Catalyst Term is one week away, so this is your last chance to book into any of our 1st week of workshops.
On Friday 18th, Judith Pinnell kicks off with "take the Silk Route", a wonderful class on the glories of silk "paper" - how to make various kinds and it's many uses.

On Saturday 19th, Linda Stokes teaches Sun Printing & More where you will come away with a stash of your own uniquely designed fabric.

Then on Sunday 20th, Jennie Abbott will be inspiring you with her Bee-d-Lishus & other tantalising Trims. Beads & Tassels galore!

My work is currently on display in a new gallery in South Fremantle.
Brazen Gallery has an exhibition called Garniture - "unique jewellery creations and contemporary paintings from WA artists, and a collection of exquisite antique Moroccan jewellery"

I have some of my jewellery, boxes & 4 wall pieces on display.

Mobius Again

I've had a couple of requests for my mobius knitting class, so I've arranged to do it again at my studio in Freo on Sat 16th June - 10.30 - 1.30. This class is nearly full already, so I'll repeat it on the following Saturday 23rd June 10.30 - 1.30

Cost $20 per person - payable on the day.

During the class I teach how to knit this twisted shoulder wrap in your chosen yarn - including how to calculate the number of stitches to cast on. For those interested, I also demonstrate the crochet version, but the knitted one is the main focus of the morning. See also post of 6th April - "Knitting Season".

Pandoras Box Re-scheduled

After the flurry of Mobius Knitting workshops, I have rescheduled my Pandora's box workshop from April which was cancelled due to ill health. It will now be held on 30th July at a venue in Applecross - 9.30am - 3pm.
Cost is $65.

In this workshop you will use a choice of patterns to create a soft, felt based trinket box. You will use a combination of applique and free-machine embroidery techniques to decorate the surface, before construction and finishing.

Getting Hooked - beginners crochet

Following a recent request, I've put together a beginners crochet class that will be held at my studio in Fremantle on Saturday 25th August 10am -1pm. Cost $25 payable on the day.
In the class I will cover the basic stitches - chain, double, treble & double treble etc - plus increasing, decreasing, following patterns and the difference between US & UK crochet terms. I'll then get you started on your first project - either a scarf, small bag or glasses case (above).

Artists in Arms Exhibition

Make a note in your diaries about this exhibition which runs for the rest of the month. I have work in the exhibition as does Catalyst tutor Jennie Abbott. Other works, from over 80 artists, include paintings, sculpture, photography, jewellery and glass work. Artists in Arms is a non profit foundation to support artists in the community whilst raising funds for charities supporting youth in crisis. This years proceeds benefit Youth Focus & Mercy Ministries.
All works are for sale & can be taken on purchase to allow for hanging new work, so the exhibition will be ever changing.

The exhibition is open to the public on Saturdays & Sundays from August 11th to 31st 2007.

Venue - the Old Berlin - corner of Roe & Milligan Streets, Northbridge
